Next, the spindle and tonearm pivot housings are machined out of the plinth and fitted with recessed hardware to support those downstream components.  Of course, neither the spindle nor the tonearm are at all conventional. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe spindle consists of a piece of columnar machined aluminum that is held in place in part by four nylon contact points and the other part by the tension of the drive belt itself.  The A\/C motor sits on its own, mid-ship within a hole in the plinth.  The whole situation is some kind of magical balancing act, but somehow it works. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tonearm is some kind of sorcery we have rarely seen!  The lightweight aluminum arm, and extremely delicate wires are held up at the pivot point by triangulated fishing line and weight. The alignment of the arm, including adjustable azimuth are all dictated by the positioning of these strings in space.  The pivot mechanism is filled with damping oil to smooth out oscillations. The towers feature four 12-inch composite woofers with magnets the size of salad bowls.  These woofers flank a pair of composite midrange drivers set in a D'Appolito array around an air motion tweeter.  The entire speaker array is an open-baffle dipole: meaning, all of the drivers are open to the front and rear giving an incredible sense of space.   The soundstage is \"wider and deeper than the room,\" yet the entire system allows for individual voices or instruments to be picked out of space as if their geo-coordinates were being telegraphed right to your brain. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA quick word on the construction of these speakers.  It's \u003cstrong\u003eworld-leading\u003c\/strong\u003e.  The armature that holds the speaker's drivers is made from the same cast aluminum used on Steinway's pianos.  The structure is so rigid and inert it makes the perfect platform to mount these incredible long-throw drivers.  Allowing them to push copious amounts of air without causing the tower to shake, flex, vibrate, or move in ANY way.  And then of course, with the most deliberate and delicate of touches, Steinway finishes off this behemoth of a system with \"grilles\" of stretched string to complete the simulated the look of a piano harp. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePower, you ask?  Yes.  There's plenty of that.  Each speaker holds in its rear compartment, a pair of\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/steinwaylyngdorf.com\/steinway-sons-a1a2\/\" title=\"Steinway Lyngdorf A1 Power Amplifiers Page Link\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eLyngdorf A1 amplifiers\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, each delivering 400 watts of power to the drivers in dynamic fashion using a power sharing feature and on-board DSP.  The A1 amplifiers alone are remarkable pieces of engineering...Something we will opine on in a later listing.   Which brings us back to the DSP....\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe entire system is managed and controlled by another, 3rd tower.  The \"Head Unit,\" as they call it, which is another Steinway\/Lyngdorf marvel.  Its commanding presence in the room matches the stature of the towers perfectly, while hiding enough intelligence behind its 17-layer lacquered piano black skin to launch a rocket.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Head Unit is built on a billet aluminum armature and contains all of the brains to feed the brawn of the Model D towers.  It's a preamp, sure.  It's also a DAC, and a soundfield generator, and a DSP controller.  \u003cem\u003e(Note, the Head Unit also houses an internal CD player, which in this example has been decommissioned and is non-operational.)\u003c\/em\u003e The Head Unit communicates with the speakers via CAT-5 cable, feeding them a time-aligned, equalized, and DSP-corrected audio signal.   The idea is to deliver the PERFECT sound to your listening position, regardless of speaker placement, room design or other physical attributes.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Head Unit accomplishes this by use of another Lyngdorf invention, the \u003cstrong\u003e\"Room Perfect\"\u003c\/strong\u003e correction system.  This system is built into the Model D Head Unit and is facilitated by a calibrated microphone, cable, and stand (all included).  A series of measurements (anywhere form 8 to 40) are conducted with the microphone to map sound characteristics of the room and create a profile.  This profile is then used to create the Soundfield settings: Neutral, Music, Open, Air, etc... Most of what reaches your ears is deflected sound, with the teacup deflecting the output of the midbass driver and the teaspoon deflecting the output of the tweeter. \u003cspan\u003eMost speakers are directional to some degree; they function at their best when heard on-axis and change character as you move off-axis. These speakers operate under a totally different principle, which Mirage describes as Omnipolar, because they don't quite achieve true omnidirectional radiation. Each one generates something of a mushroom head of sound that seems spread around the enclosure. The soundfield lies in the overlap of these nearly circular mushroom heads. These are fairly easy to drive with an 8 ohm impedance and 88dB\/2.38V sensitivity. The drive unit combination gives a quoted -3dB response of 20Hz to 40kHz and this was quite believable during extended audition.
