ADS L980, Big Sounding Classic in Utilitarian Skin

ADS is yet another iconic New England hifi brand with an incredible product line and history.  Originally an importer of German-made speakers and electronics, ADS gradually grew to replace its distant cousin, Braun, in the mouths of audiophiles from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.

The L980 was near the top of the line model for the company at the time.  A large-sized "bookshelf" speaker that sat right at the pinnacle of ADS’s line-up in the late 1980s. The L980 incorporated ADS's signature "sticky" dome 2" midrange and 3/4" tweeter, and a large, high-excursion 12" mineral cone woofer in an acoustic suspension cabinet.  The combination of these drivers, and the sealed enclosure gave this speaker that iconic "New England" sound, but with impressive high frequency extension to match the recording media of the time.  In fact, this series were used in studios regularly, causing ADS to introduce the Studio Stands.  

The beveled corners and clean lines of the monotone black vinyl wrapped cabinet combine with the "oh-so 80s" metal grills to give these speakers that iconic Star Trek look. The combo looks fabulous together and have become a classic ADS style.  

Physically these speakers are not perfect.  There are a few blemishes on the tops of the cabinets which are visible from 3-4 feet away, but certainly no show-stoppers. One speaker has very slight swelling on one bottom edge, but does not impact performance at all. Price reflects condition..As in, they are already discounted! 

These speakers have excellent range and play any kind of music with ease and clarity and they look great doing it.  This pair of speakers has been fully tested and is ready for many more years of music enjoyment.  

The Studio Stands (ADS Catalog Number, F9P) themselves are one of the rarest items in the ADS catalog.  Made from what looks like the base of an office chair, the stands are specifically designed to allow these heavy monitors the ability to roll around a studio environment. They are sturdy and unlike anything we have seen before.
