The Boston Acoustics VR975 represents the flagship of Boston’s acclaimed VR Series—a loudspeaker designed to bring together full-range dynamics, elegant industrial design, and advanced acoustic engineering. Introduced in the late 1990s and produced into the early 2000s, the VR975 was the company’s ambitious take on a self-contained full-range tower, blending traditional high-fidelity principles with built-in powered subwoofer technology.
At the foundation of the VR975 is a side-mounted 10-inch high-compliance treated paper-cone woofer, powered by a dedicated 150-watt RMS continuous amplifier. Working in tandem with a 12-inch polymer-cone passive radiator, the powered woofer system extends bass response cleanly and powerfully down to the low 20Hz range. This approach offers the authority of a built-in subwoofer without sacrificing the speed and natural integration required for music listening.
Above the bass section, the VR975 employs a carefully engineered array: dual 4.5-inch midrange drivers handle the critical vocal and instrumental range, delivering both presence and accuracy. At the top, Boston’s acclaimed 1-inch VR aluminum dome tweeter with Amplitude Modulation Device (AMD) ensures extended, airy treble free from harshness. This driver complement is laid out to project a broad soundstage with excellent imaging, while maintaining a balanced, neutral tonal signature.
The result is a loudspeaker that plays with both finesse and impact: bass that digs deep but remains tight and musical, a midband that projects voices and instruments with convincing naturalness, and a top end that sparkles while retaining long-term listenability. The powered subwoofer section means that the VR975 can fill large rooms with cinematic authority yet still perform with delicacy in a dedicated stereo setup.
Visually, the VR975s stand tall and elegant, with gloss black accents and a no-nonsense cloth "sock" to cover all of the working bits. This set has had some work done to the top finish on the cabinet. These top cabs were originally covered in a plastic shroud which shrinks and cracks over time. We have painted it to match the original finish as closely as possible.
This is a great sounding system. Perfect for a home theater front set, or for 2 channel listening. One additional oddity, these are both "Left" handed speakers. Meaning, the low frequency drivers are both on the left side. This was actually common in the late 1990s, as Boston Acoustics, and their partners Tweeter and Best Buy, were "blowing out" these towers to make room for new inventory. People often left with two lefts, or two rights. As is the case with this set.
Price reflects these anomalies.
