ESS AMT-1a, Dr. Heil's Air Motion Technology Come to Life!

In 1972, Dr. Oskar Heil developed a new high frequency transducer technology he dubbed, the AMT ("Air Motion Transformer").  The AMT design differed from previous driver technologies by using a folded mylar membrane with metallic traces embedded in its surface.  The pleated assembly is then suspended between magnetic "poles."  As an audio signal passes through the pleats, it reacts to the magnetic flux and compresses the air in between the pleats at a very high velocity.  This accordion-style motion creates sound and the results are highly efficient and accurate. 

This set of AMT-1a have been completely restored and updated. Everything has been done:

• New internal wiring, speaker wire jacks and crossover caps.
• Cleaned high frequency controls
• New twelve inch woofers, passives and AMTs purchased directly from ESS.
• Sections of cabinet repainted.
• Cabinet veneer stripped and refinished.
• Original speaker grills cleaned, vintage AMT-1a reinstalled

There's something uniquely special about this design.  On the surface it's a simple 2-way, but the Heil tweeter adds a certain clarity and presence that's hard to explain.  The sound seems like it's coming from everywhere yet imaging and instrument placement are right where they should be.  NO listening fatigue, even at high volumes, for long periods of time, the AMTs sound smooth, refined and clean.  And this set in particular is completely updated, like a new set, but with today's driver and component improvements. 

The long-throw 12" bass driver combines with an equally compliant passive radiator to provide low-end punch that is able to keep up squarely with he AMTs pursuit of high range perfection.
