Like many audio receivers introduced in 1962, the Fisher 800B was a bit of a "tweener" - it landed right at the beginning of a huge wave of stereophile content, both over the airwaves in through physical media - notably vinyl. Avery Fisher sought to produce the absolute best product to cross-over from mono to stereo listening and developed the 800 series with a few mid-production changes and adaptations. To put it into perspective exactly how innovative the 800B was at the time, the retail price was nearly $500... The moral equivalent to $5,500 today. There's no doubt, this receiver was a luxury item, targeting discerning listeners who wanted only the absolute best.
In 1962, very few radio stations were broadcasting in true multiplex stereo. A popular and less expensive alternative for broadcasters was the use of the FM-AM simulcast. In this case, the radio's tuner would be able to capture one channel via FM and a second channel via AM, broadcast at the same time, and the amp would play them back in crude "stereo" format. Fisher was aware of the limitations in the market and unlike many of his competitors who only provided for one format, Fisher provided both.
In terms of sound quality, the 800 series followed closely behind the incredibly capable 500 series utilizing the popular 7591 output tube, fed by a lineup of 12AX7 signal tubes. A quad of 7591s in push-pull configuration allowed the 800B to provide about 32 watts per channel into an 8 ohm load.
The 800B also offered a host of functionality and connectivity, rendering it very useful even by today's standards. A lovely tube phono input stage, line auxilliary input, and line tape input are selectable via a centrally located knob, along with the aforementioned host of "radio" options. Bass/Treble controls as well as both a high (pop) and low (rumble) filters are easily selectable and a loudness contour provides quick and easy hi-low boost for low-volume listening.
This particular unit has undergone a complete service and rebuild by our expert in-house tech, Tom B. Several parts replaced, cleaned and refurbished to bring this unit back into exceptional condition. In addition to what's on the inside this 800B is clad in a stunning, custom-made, mahogany-veneered wood case. This was virtually a no-expense-spared restoration.
Yes, are there other 800Bs out there in the used market. Sure, but you won't find one that has been lovingly restored like this one, nor with this bespoke casework. This is THE ONE to own.
