The Pop Pulse PCM1796 Mk II DAC is a thoughtful and purpose-built digital-to-analog converter that puts fidelity, low noise, and pure musicality above all else. Housed in a two-piece aluminum chassis, this split-box design physically separates the high-current mains transformer and power supply on the left from the sensitive digital-conversion circuitry on the right. That isolation reduces electromagnetic interference and mechanical vibrations that can degrade sound, so you get cleaner, quieter background and more precise detail. Every component in this little DAC was chosen for sonic character and reliability, not for cost cutting.

At its heart lies the venerable Burr-Brown / Texas Instruments PCM1796 DAC chip — a 24-bit, up to 192 kHz stereo converter with excellent measured performance.  The Mk II version builds on its predecessor by upgrading several analog stage components: the output op-amp is swapped in favor of a high-quality device (for example, an LM-49720) that gives smoother, more natural treble and better control. Capacitors in the signal path (Elna, National “FC” etc.) are upgraded to reduce distortion and preserve micro-dynamics.

On the connectivity side, the Pop Pulse PCM1796 Mk II gives you what’s essential: USB 2.0 input, optical TOSLINK, and coaxial S/PDIF digital inputs.  In terms of analog output, you get a line-level RCA output (~ 2.0 V) which is sufficient for most preamp and amplifier setups.

This little DAC has hidden under the radar of audiophiles for many years.  Although not the biggest, brightest, and most expensive, it performs where it matters most, with the music. A great little budget piece to experiment with and enjoy.
