Aerial Acoustics, by any measure, made some of the finest speakers in the industry for over 30 years. Founded in 1991, Aerial was created by a small group of engineers from ADS. These designers combined their knowledge of dynamic speakers to create Aerial's first model, the 10T. Soon after came the very short lived Model 8. A miraculous accomplishment if taking into account it was 90% of the performance package as the 10T at 50% the price. Aerial founder, Mike Kelly's goal for the 8 was to design a speaker that would perform like the 10T but use far less floor space and look more graceful. Clearly, home theater was on his mind. Though the 8 was not designed specifically for that market, its cool, smooth appearance and small-width footprint are far more living-room- (and spouse-) friendly than the boxy 10T. The 8's graceful dimensions make it look deceptively small. In fact, it's a fairly large (45" H by 9" W by 20" D), box weighing in at 120 lbs. Starting at the bottom, the 8 duplicates the 10T's bass system: a +10"-diameter woofer incorporating a 2" voice-coil and a large magnet in a 61-liter rear-ported box tuned to 19Hz. The enclosure's resonance point is higher than the driver's operational bandwidth. According to Kelly, the driver "never breaks up or compresses dynamics."
As the company matured and expanded, new product offerings were made available. Notably, the SW12 powered subwoofer which adds even more low-end grunt to an already impressive system. The SW12 cabinetry is equally stout with 2-inch thick, front, rear and side walls; and 1-inch internal bracing. The cabinets are "dead" to resonance which allows the massive long-throw, overhung, 12" woofer to efficiently move air down under 20 Hz with aplomb. The custom designed 400 watt power amp includes multiple crossover points, slope and phase control, as well as amplitude.
The examples we have here Model 8 & SW12 are nearly perfect and sound incredible. One-owner speakers, reluctantly being sold, which have been babied and cared for since Day 1. Their Rosewood finish on both the Model 8 and the SW12 is impeccable albeit there is an inch long blemish on the top of one M8s which is only noticeable at close distance - pleas know the finishes this series Aerial products were all hand-applied. Grille covers are all in tact.
To top it off the SW12 comes with the optional (and expensive) Sound Anchors; heavy-gauge steel stands which provide a strong footing, improved imaging and bass response from this killer sub.
As always, demos of this incredible system are available in Andover, MA.
