ATC was founded in 1974 by Billy Woodman, an Australian-born engineer and pianist who had relocated to the UK. Woodman’s vision was to design loudspeakers that could handle the extreme dynamic range and low distortion required in professional recording studios.

The ATC C6 Powered Subwoofer is the result of several generations of the perfection of Billy Woodman's ambitions.  It is a statement-piece of low-frequency engineering, designed to anchor the most demanding music and cinema systems with effortless authority. Hand-built in England, the C6 was developed as part of ATC’s Reference line, and like all ATC products it embodies the brand’s uncompromising approach to accuracy, dynamics, and long-term reliability.

Behind its understated yet substantial exterior lies a 12-inch "Super Linear" bass driver, an ATC-original design employing short-coil/long-gap topology for exceptionally low distortion and high linearity across the full excursion range. Driven by an internal 450-watt Class AB amplifier, the C6 delivers bass with both immense power and remarkable control, extending cleanly below 20Hz while retaining speed and definition that lesser subwoofers often blur. This makes it as adept at reproducing the natural resonance of an acoustic double bass as it is at conveying the impact of a film soundtrack.

The design goal was to develop a subwoofer that can underpin large-scale ATC monitoring systems or high-end stereo setups without drawing attention to itself—until the recording demands it.
