Classé Sigma 2200i, Hybrid Integrated Powerhouse

The Sigma 2200i is a new take on their traditional philosophy.  The 2200i was introduced in 2017 when a plethora of new technologies and features were flooding hifi equipment at every turn.  Not to be left out, Classé decided to join the party with this Sigma integrated amp.  Hosting a healthy dose of output power of 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and doubling that to 400 watts per channel into 4 ohms, the Sigma goes a slightly different direction from Classé's historic Class A/AB multi-transistored layouts.  The 2200i is a Class-D amp.  In a nutshell, the "
normal" output transistors are switched VERY rapidly using a digital PWM-clocked switching power supply.  

Also, in a sense, the 2200i is as close to a "full digital" integrated amp as we have seen.  Analog signals are not processed in a traditional way, they are converted using a 24-bit/96k PWM ADC into a digitally controlled stream which can be fed directly into a digitally controlled and monitored signal processor.  This brings both analog and digital signals onto the same exact platform for processing.  On-board features such as the fully-customizable parametric equalization, are all digitally handled.   Only at the very final output amplification stage is the audio signal converted back, the PWM data filtered, and speakers are awash with activity.

In addition to all of the amplification whiz-bang, the 2200i has a host of other features which really bring it into the modern era.  It's networkable, allowing direct control using the Classé proprietary app. It has a row of digital inputs from SPDIF to USB to HDMI to accommodate everything from your laptop player to your PS5.  And it also includes three analog inputs, one balanced and two single-ended.  

The 2200i also supports 2.1 channel operation with a dedicated balanced or unbalanced subwoofer output, with a highly-customizable internal crossover for sub control.  

Originally retailing for over $5,500, the Sigma 2200i was an investment, but one that paid dividends with exciting and authoritative performance.  And the technology imparted on the unit 7-8 years ago is still relevant today, providing exceptional functionality in addition to amazing sound.
