David Hafler has become a legend in audio circles. Hafler made his mark early on at Dynaco and took his experiences there even further a few years alter when we started Hafler Company. The 945 preamplifier was designed to be a full-function, high-gain "preceiver" - All the benefits of a receiver, but with the final amplification stage left to an outboard device. The 945 is packed with features, and its specifications are not shabby either.
At its heart is a dual-mono signal path which follows the audio signal throughout most of the unit. This separation means "darker darks and lighter lights" for your music passages, delivering impact and transparency that few other preamps like this can offer. The signal-to-noise ratio is typically greater than 100 dB, and total harmonic distortion is kept below 0.005%, making the preamplifier virtually transparent in its operation. The use of discrete components in the signal path, coupled with careful circuit layout and grounding techniques, further contributes to the unit’s low-noise floor and wide dynamic range.
The 945 is powered by a robust linear power supply employing a toroidal transformer, discrete voltage regulation, and ample filtering capacitance. This configuration provides clean, stable DC voltages to all analog circuits, reducing susceptibility to ripple and line-induced noise.
Input selection is facilitated through a rotary switch controlling multiple high-level line inputs, including CD, tuner, video, auxiliary, and a tape monitor loop. Each input is routed through gold-plated RCA connectors located on the rear panel to minimize contact resistance and signal degradation over time. The unit also includes a high-quality MM/MC phono preamplifier stage, with selectable loading and gain settings to accommodate a variety of moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.
