Von Schweikert VR-4 SR MkII, Utmost Musical Refinement

The Von Schweikert VR-4 SR MkII loudspeakers shown here are finished in a stunning African Hazelwood veneer.  These speakers represent a rare combination of meticulous craftsmanship and full-range acoustic authority. On the outside, the book-matched veneer, with a satin-gloss polyester resin clear coat delivers the essence of fine furniture. And the cabinet construction provides a performance platform that allows for true reference-grade audio reproduction.  The VR-4 SR MkII's  warm, aesthetic elevates any listening space, and the striking grain patterns make this finish particularly desirable among collectors and enthusiasts.

The VR-4 SR Mk II is a sophisticated four-way loudspeaker system, built as a two-piece modular tower that uses a triple-chambered hybrid transmission line for deep, controlled, and highly articulate bass. The enclosure is heavily braced with a 2-inch front baffle and multiple interlocking structures, while felt, foam, and Dacron damping internally suppress resonance, supporting the clarity and precision of the driver array. A flared, tuned vent helps the speakers achieve unusually natural and extended low-frequency performance without the “one-note” character associated with many ported designs.

Each speaker incorporates high-resolution drivers sourced from well-respected European manufacturers. The bass foundation comes from a pair of 8.5-inch aluminum woofers, delivering powerful but textured low-end. The midrange is handled by a 7-inch carbon-Kevlar-cellulose Aerogel cone known for its speed, transparency, and lifelike presence. High frequencies are reproduced by a 1.5-inch dual-concentric silk dome tweeter, complemented by a 1-inch rear-firing ambience driver that recreates the spatial cues of live recordings, adding depth and air to the soundstage. Von Schweikert’s fourth-order acoustic crossover network, built with premium components, ties these drivers together with remarkable cohesiveness and phase accuracy.

With a sensitivity of roughly 92 dB and a nominal 6-ohm impedance, the VR-4 SR Mk II pairs well with a wide variety of amplifiers, from moderately powered tube units to large solid-state designs. The dual sets of binding posts support bi-wiring, which Von Schweikert strongly encourages to achieve the highest performance. When dialed in correctly—particularly the adjustable rear ambience driver—the speakers are capable of producing a wide, immersive, almost holographic soundstage that many reviewers have described as “magical.”

Build quality is substantial, with each tower’s upper mid/tweeter module weighing in at over 50 pounds and the woofer module nearly twice that. For obvious reasons, a local sale is preferred on this set, but we could ship via freight across the US for a fee.

Sonically, the midrange on this speaker is open and natural, the bass is deep and impeccably controlled, and the treble remains smooth and refined even at elevated volumes. The speakers exhibit excellent transparency and dynamic capability, revealing the character of upstream components while maintaining an inviting, fatigue-free presentation. Imaging is absolutely top-notch.  The speakers, despite their size and heft, disappear into the room in a magical, spooky way. 

This set has been examined and verified by our in-house specialists.  Besides a few minor "love bumps" in the lacquered finish, the speakers are in wonderful physical condition.  And they play gloriously.
