Bowers & Wilkins is a brand that has become synonymous with precise, excellent sound. Since 1966, B&W has been pushing the envelope of what's possible with hifi, from design and engineering, to material science. B&W was the first company to use pure woven Kevlar as a cone material and also the first to separate the tweeter from the main cabinet to reduce modulation transmitted from lower frequency drivers to the upper frequencies. B&W was also the first company to use chemical vapor deposition on tweeter diaphragms.
The Matrix series of speakers, including the compact bookshelf Matrix 1 we have here, pushed the boundaries again. This time, B&W engineers developed a cabinet construction using a plastic and wood composite material in a honeycomb pattern to minimize coloration caused by the cabinet itself. This cabinet design coupled with 6" woofer cones created from a specially-designed polypropylene formula, and 1" poly dome tweeters; both drivers using ferrofluid cooling inside their voice coils. The result is very smooth, even-tempered music with a distinctive B&W presence.
The cabinets on this set are covered in book-matched, figured walnut veneer and look extraordinary. Original grille cloth is in excellent shape as well.
