Bipolar speakers were all the rage during the peak Home Theater years of the 1990s and 2000s. The reason for the fascination with speakers that fire in two opposing directions was to allow the design to be compact in stature, but project an extra-wide and involving soundstage into the room to enhance the desired surround sound effect. Definitive Technology was a leader in this type of alignment with their launch in the late 1980s of the BP2000, a giant powered-tower speaker which amazed audio show crowds with auditorium-filling dynamic sound in a slender footprint.
Fast forward a few years as Def Tech gained in popularity, and a new line of non-powered BP's began to hit the market. The leader of this new series was the BP-10. the BP-10 shares many of the same design characteristics as its predecessors: a slender, upright driver layout, front-to-back opposing drive units, and gloss black top and bottom wood caps flanking a tightly stretched black cloth "sock." It's a design that fits in anywhere and disappears into a Home Theater room when the lights go down.
These BP-10, like all of them, contain opposing 1" tweeters and 6.5" woofers positioned toward the top of the cabinet. A computer-design complex of ports terminates at the bottom-rear of the cabinet, with each port tuned to separate frequencies.
These examples are in very nice physical condition. The cloth is in great shape with no tears or pulls. The top caps have some minor signs of wear from the occasional room decoration or picture frame, but no show-stoppers. And the sound is as clean and even-handed as you'd expect from a top company like Definitive.
And for the price, these speakers are an industry bargain!
