McIntosh is one of the most dependable brand names when it comes to high-end audio systems. For years the brand has been recognized by audiophiles throughout the world as equipment that delivers clear and consistent quality in music. McIntosh is probably best known for its amplifiers and preamps, but the company produces many other components and parts for stereo and home theatre. Of course, McIntosh (and other companies) have spent the last 50 years chasing - what some consider - the perfect Mac Sound.
The MC240 was the first (and last) edition of the great McIntosh stereo tube amplifiers. Able to used as a stereo 40 watt per channel amp, or with the flick or a switch, an 80 watt per channel mono amp. The chassis design and overall layout for the MC240 was later borrowed by the MC225 and MC275 that followed it. The MC240 to this day has some of the smoothest, most musical sound in the industry, often described as the "perfect sound." The massive transformers and elegantly simple layout allow the amp to drive down to 2 ohm loads (on the correct output taps) with bountiful bass and articulate low end.
If you are one of those audiophiles who doesn't look at old tube gear because of maintenance or reliability issues, then this is the one for you! This MC 240 has been completely overhauled internally by Herb Ward, Master Mac Tech in 2015 (see resto sheet) with documentation to go with it. Outrageously rare & expensive vintage Tung Sol output tubes power this beast while a cadre of NOS rectifier and driver tubes set the stage on the input side. The unit has been recapped with high quality mylar and electrolytic caps, and many other internal components replaced with new.
The MC240 here is - we think - the finest example of this iconic amplifier in North America. Visually stunning and looks like it's been preserved in a time capsule. Please know, this 240 was the pride and joy of Richard K and by now we are all familiar with his incredible collection of electronics. A totally plug-and-play unit, it's ready to emanate beautiful music into your listening room for the next 20+ years. Truly a SPECIAL component.
