Polk Audio was formed by Matthew Polk, George Klopfer, and Sandy Gross in 1972 with their first commercially available speaker system, the Monitor 7, released in 1974. Using their collective engineering education from Johns Hopkins University, the team was set on utilizing the school's materials research laboratory facilities to their advantage. Since then the study of how materials react to acoustic signals has been a foundation of the company's designs.
The Monitor 10 was introduced shortly after the 7. Using a dual-6.5" treated paper pulp woofer assembly and a large 10" lightweight composite passive radiator, the system was lauded for punchy, articulate, and resonant bass response. Highs were provided by a Peerless 1" coated silk dome tweeter, a favorite of many speaker manufacturers from that era.
This set of 10s packs a powerful punch. They play very well with low and medium powered receivers from the era but also hold their own with tube equipment, providing a deep, rich, and lush listening experience. Covered in a simulated walnut veneer, the speakers may not have the physical presence of some of their older "mid century" styled cousins, but sonically they definitely up the ante.
