The Sony ES series of audio components was developed to provide state-of-the-art performance in consumer audio technology. Although they were hardly inexpensive, most ES components were priced well below most so-called "high-end" audio products. Coupling Sony's pursuit of the Elevated Standard of sound reproduction with the mid-1990s pursuit of varied digital formats, and you have the perfect climate for the DTC-60ES DAT Player/Recorder.
The DTC-60ES aptly illustrates the ES approach by using only top-shelf components inside and outside the unit - A philosophy where everything matters. DAT, or Digital Audio Tape, was a market adaptation to the weaknesses of the Compact Disc. DAT media were durable, could hold more information than a standard length CD, and didn't skip! The DTC-60ES utilized a 1-bit High Density Linear DAC coupled with an 8-bit pulse width modulator. The SuperBitMapping ("SBM") technology provided equivalent to 20-bit resolution with up to 48kHz clocking.
Add on Sony's internal damping, stabilization, and digital filters and the result is glitch-free and sonically excellent music whether recording or listening.
If you are looking for a unique addition to your audio collection, or want to dabble in vintage formats that provide sonic excellence with a little esoteric deployment, this DAT deck is for you.
* Note, the Open/Close function on the tape door gets sticky at times, but with a little coaxing, operates completely. No remote. Price reflects these issues. Offered as-is.
