Acoustic Research

Acoustic Research, AR, one of the most iconic audio brands in the history of the industry.  Founded in 1954 in Cambridge, MA, Acoustic Research was the brainchild of two entrepid engineers, designers, and businessmen: Edgar Vilchur and Henry Kloss.  The company developed many firsts, but one of the most notable was the successful development and measurement of a sealed speaker cabinet design, they dubbed "Acoustic Suspension."  This notion of utilizing the rear pressure wave of the loudspeaker driver as a type of damping element in the tuning of the system was hardly understood at the time.  Their research and drive to product a consumer product in this way, reduced speaker enclosure sizes while retaining low-frequency fidelity.
