OK, so here we have a very special set of Klipsch K-Horns from the estate of Norman Dolph, American songwriter, painter, music industry executive, entrepreneur & most importantly, producer of the Velvet Underground!! These very special speakers come to us from Norm's widow, Eve Adams-Dolph who has been a monumental help in getting these incredible time capsules here to our shop. She's trusted Holt Hill Audio with one, among many, of their art and musical treasures. One of Norm and Eve's favorite pastimes was having various music and industry insiders over for dinner, drinks and a long night of LPs played through these special K-Horns. Yes, they have some pretty impressive historic value but that's not all of it. They play amazingly and have been tested by our in-house tech team; they are said to be performing 100% on-point. Now we could have given these the full restoration treatment but no, not these. Not trying to remove any of the natural patina or drink spots where Isaak Hayes may have rested his cognac in '93 from the black lacquer finish.
Yes, it's true. The Klipschorn, affectionately called the “K‑Horn,” is indeed recognized as the longest‑continuously produced consumer loudspeaker in history. Originally launched in 1946, it's still handcrafted in Hope, Arkansas and sold today, with remarkably few changes from the original design. It continues to be featured as an enduring model in the Klipsch Heritage lineup alongside other legacy products like La Scala, Cornwall, and Heresy.
This pair of K-Horns were born in the early Spring of 1992 and were purchased by a true lover of all musical genres; remained with the Dolph family for their entire life.
The K-Horn was engineered to reproduce the full dynamic range of live music with minimal distortion, maximum efficiency, and thunderous low-frequency extension. And even today, this design still delivers the goods. Classical music flows into the room effortlessly, with dynamics and presence that just can't be matched with traditional "boxed" speaker systems. Jazz ensembles reverberate in a way that matched the effect of a live performance. Classic rock, ROCKS! These speakers just do everything extremely well. And with 103dB efficiency, they do it with VERY modest levels of power. Depending on the room, 3-5 SET tube watts could absolutely light these things up beautifully.
Enclosure Design:
Folded exponential bass horn (requires corner placement for proper performance)
Sealed upper cabinet housing midrange and tweeter horns
Frequency Response:
Approximately 33 Hz – 17,000 Hz ±5 dB
(Varies slightly depending on room placement and production year)
Sensitivity:
104 dB SPL / 1W / 1m
Exceptionally high efficiency; ideal for low-powered tube amplifiers
Nominal Impedance:
8 ohms (some versions marked as 16 ohms, depending on driver configuration)
A fabulous set capable of earth shaking performance - this particular system was powered by a pair of McIntosh MC30 monos and an all Mac front end, a match made in heaven. Performance is exceptional. Just what one would expect from a speaker design that has remained largely unchanged for an entire human lifetime. Have to say this, they are exceptional and play better that MANY of the K-Horns we have experienced. Really special speakers with a VERY special lineage.
Demos are highly encouraged in Andover, MA.
