Thiel Audio manufactured highly sought after hi-end loudspeakers from their Kentucky factory from 1977 to 2018.  Brothers, Jim and Tom Thiel, and partner Kathy Gornik made their name in audio with the study and design of speakers that compensated for time delays between high and low frequency drivers due to the non-concentric nature.  Their studies showed that our ear/brain interpret even the tiniest of time delays as "wrong," which listeners tend to describe as "unmusical" or "unrealistic" sound.

The Thiel CS6 floorstanding loudspeaker represents a masterclass in phase-coherent, time-aligned acoustic design. At its core lies a true first-order crossover topology (6 dB/octave), a Thiel company standard, paired with a heavily sloped, cast-concrete front baffle that physically aligns the acoustic centers of every driver. This mechanical and electrical precision ensures that high, midrange, and low frequencies arrive at the listener's ear simultaneously, yielding a remarkably stable soundstage, pin-point imaging, and a phase response kept within a tight ±10 degrees.

The driver complement is equally uncompromising, featuring a 1-inch aluminum-dome tweeter coaxially mounted inside a 4-inch aluminum/Styrofoam sandwiched cone.  At the bottom is a dedicated 10-inch aluminum-cone woofer and a massive 12-inch passive radiator.

Weighing in at 170 pounds per cabinet, the enclosure is built for total inertness, effectively eliminating the panel resonances and energy-storage artifacts that smear fine musical details. Operating across a wide 28 Hz to 28 kHz frequency response (±3 dB), the Thiel CS6 refuses to embellish or soften poor recordings; instead, it acts as a transparent, high-resolution window into the performance.

These speakers demand a muscular, high-current amplifier rated between 100 and 400 watts per channel.  All-in-one devices and home theater receivers need not apply.  The speakers’ 4-ohm nominal impedance (dropping at tomes to 2.3 ohms) and 86 dB sensitivity dictate the need for this type of current grabbing power, but the sonic payoff is an effortless balance with authoritative, deep-reaching bass that never sounds loose or colored.

This pair are in superb condition.  A few very minor nicks here and there from use, but really no showstoppers.  The hand-matched, mirrored clear cherry veneer looks beautiful in any environment and the sleek profile allows them to blend in with nearly any type of decor.

Demos are encouraged in Andover, MA.
