There's no doubt, the retro thing is in, and here to stay for a while. Larger speaker companies are developing products that make an attempt to reach a new audience, using classic, vintage designs. For most people, the look is as important as the sound, and the same could be said for PSB's newest line, the Passif series, built as a nod to PSB's founders and their foray into speaker design using simplistic crossover networks, reliable components, and excellent build quality for the budget-minded...A tradition that began 50 years ago.
The Passif 50 is the first in this line, and we presume there will be others. Featuring a lovely walnut-wrapped enclosure, linen grilles, and retro metal stands, the Passif 50 sits about 34" high and commands your attention in the room. The design is comprised of a 1" dome tweeter, 6.5" paper cone woofer, and 8" paper cone passive radiator. We don't see the use of the passive radiator used as much these days, but in the 1970s and 1980s, they were seen quite often. The passive radiator offers many of the benefits of a ported enclosure, but without added port noise.
These speakers look and play lovely. The on-axis response of 50-20,000Hz, 89 dB sensitivity, and 6 ohm nominal impedance make these speakers a joy to drive, even with low-watt amps and receivers. They are incredibly versatile.
Priced competitively at $2,499/pair, and available to demo at our Lawrence, MA showroom.
