Akai Electric Company Ltd. is an audio industry rarity in one particular way. The company was founded...twice: once in 1929 and again 1946. A victim of WWII, Akai essentially collapsed and was rebuilt by Saburo Akai, son of the original founder. The company has been rooted in consumer audio of some sort since the very beginnings, and it's really a shame that the 1990s saw Akai breathe its last gasp before before becoming just another badge-engineered brand.
In their prime, Akai made incredible products. Well-regarded for their recording equipment and consumer reel-to-reel decks, Akai branched into cassettes in the 1970s and 1980s.
The GXC-39D was one such product that has stood the tests of time and still performs extremely well considering the affordable price point and simplicity of the design. The deck uses glass-crystal play/record and erase heads. It also features Dolby-B noise reduction to help with tape hiss during recording. The top-loading design is really neat and makes the piece as much as a visual or design element as it is a functioning piece of gear.
This unit has been fully serviced and tested by our tech, Tom Brander, and is ready to play that funky music for decades more. It's in excellent physical condition, with lit meters, and function buttons and slides that move with snap and purpose.
Demos are available in Lawrence, MA.
