Akai Electric Company Ltd. is an audio industry rarity in one particular way. The company was founded...twice: once in 1929 and again 1946. A victim of WWII, Akai essentially collapsed and was rebuilt by Saburo Akai, son of the original founder. The company has been rooted in consumer audio of some sort since the very beginnings, and it's really a shame that the 1990s saw Akai breathe its last gasp before before becoming just another badge-engineered brand.
In their prime, Akai made incredible products. Well-regarded for their recording equipment and consumer reel-to-reel decks, Akai branched into cassettes in the 1970s and 1980s.
The GXF-31 from 1982 is a 2-head, 2-motor single-well cassette player/recorder that still performs today as well as it did when it was brand new. Featuring both Dolby B and C Noise Reduction, as well as an automatic tape bias control, this little deck was state-of-the-art for its day. The unit also has two front-mounted microphone inputs so you can record your memoirs or "tea time" with the kids.
This unit has been fully serviced and tested by our tech, Tom Brander, and is ready to play for decades more. It's in excellent physical condition, with lit meters, and function buttons and knobs that glide effortlessly.
Demos are available in Lawrence, MA.
