Akai Electric Company Ltd. is an audio industry rarity in one particular way.  The company was founded...twice: once in 1929 and again 1946.  A victim of WWII, Akai essentially collapsed and was rebuilt by Saburo Akai, son of the original founder.  The company has been rooted in consumer audio of some sort from the very beginnings until its eventual demise in the mid-1990s.

In their prime, Akai made incredible products.  Well-regarded for their recording equipment and consumer reel-to-reel decks, Akai have been synonymous with high-quality tape recording for many generations.

The GX-4000B was a product that still performs extremely well considering the affordable price point and simplicity of the design. The 4000D was essentially a re-release of a very popular 1970s model.  Released in 1984, the deck feature many high-end features seen on the top-models in the 1970s, but in a modern and compact chassis.

The deck is a 1-motor, 3-head, 2-speed component with incredible fidelity given its smalls size.  Although it can only play the smaller 7" reels, its 2-speed capabilities add quite a bit of functionality, at 3-3/4 ips or 7-1/2 ips speeds.  The 34-24,000 Hz frequency response and n 60 dB S/N ratio for tape are some of the highest available for a deck that was released at this price point in 1984.

This unit has been fully serviced and tested by our tech, Tom B, and is ready to play for many years more. It's in excellent physical condition, with lit meters, and function buttons and slides that move with snap and purpose.
