We have seen hundreds of DIY speakers.  Some efforts are pretty successful, others...Not so much.  But 99% of the time, an experienced eye and ear can tell the difference between a factory build and DIY.  These speakers are something different: an exceptional build, developed from a highly respected kit, and utilizing top-shelf components.  We present to you, the PBN Audio Scanspeak B1371...

PBN Audio is the brainchild of speaker designer, Peter Noerbaek. Peter is a Danish furniture designer and engineer with a decades-long history in the audio industry.  His passion for audio, as well as his support for the DIY community are tremendous. It only takes a few emails or a phone call to understand that Peter is in this for the love of music.

Peter designed the B1371 speaker system to take advantage of the most advanced, highly-regarded components from the Danish driver factory, Scanspeak.  Scanspeak has been making drivers for over 5 decades.  The B1371 uses Scanspeak's flagship 1" Beryllium tweeter as the starting point for an incredible musical journey.  The tweeter's relatively low resonant frequency allows it to be paired with larger midranges, giving the tweeter a broader range of responsibilities, enhancing soundstage and imaging.

Next the B1371 uses the Revalator 7" paper composite cone midrange.  A highly efficient driver with a broad pass-band. The cone material lends itself to incredibly natural mid and low-mid music reproduction.  The driver all but disappears sonically.

Finally, the foundation is the massively impressive 13" Revalator woofer with a 3" voice coil and massive magnet assembly.  The woofer is loaded in a large, rectangular cabinet with a slotted bottom port. The entire enclosure was designed by Peter, with full specifications and support available from Peter himself.

On to the cabinets, they are superbly built, heavy, and covered on 4 sides with a beautiful Zebrawood veneer.  The front and back baffles are painted with a clean, durable satin black paint.  All covering a massive structure of 1" thick MDF and piles of internal bracing.

The crossovers on these speakers are equally shocking.  The previous owner, not 100% satisfied with the original kit of parts supplied by Peter's DIY dealer, Madisound, asked Peter directly for upgrade paths that he might pursue. Peter obliged and developed an entire suite of upgrades for the crossover, with enough changes that all new components were purchased and installed.  Solen caps were swapped out for Zen Acoustics. Iron core inductors were changed for low Z, air core. The resultant crossover become so large that it actually didn't fit inside the cabinet any more, so the builder created outboard mounting brackets to hold it all together.  It's really a sight!

Soundwise, these speakers are amazing. They are true full-rangers. The 13" woofer digs down cleanly and smoothly to 30 Hz and beyond.  These are "Not Disco Speakers" as Peter would say.  They are refined and polite, especially in the bass region, but when given the program, they can pack a HUGE punch.  Classical music rings with clarity and precision.

These speakers need BIG amps. The Rotel components pictured, with 300watts per channel of solid state power, would be a good start.  A Plinius Hiato would pair well also, for those seeking something new.

You won't find another set of these, ever.  Truly one-of-a-kind. Truly special.
