Acoustic Research ES-1 Turntable, Ortofon 2M Bronze Cart, Linn Basik+ Arm
The Acoustic Research ARXA and XB turntables were runaway hits for the company. In 1984, the market called for a modernized product and AR answered with the ES-1. The table was essentially completely reengineered with a new, dense MDF plinth replacing the open-frame pressboard plinth of previous versions. To meet the demand of the burgeoning DIY audiophile market, AR sold these tables with and without tonearms mounted, which become commonplace in the industry.
However, a few AR traits were retained, the high-torque motor provides trouble-free operation. The dual-concentric billet aluminum platter and 3-point spring-loaded suspension were also maintained, a design which has been copied by numerous other "famous" turntable companies for decades.
This model is finished in a well-presented Piano Gloss Black, which is hard to find in this condition. The table keeps speed perfectly, and is fitted with a beautiful Linn Basik Plus tonearm, which was a common add-on for this model. We recently installed a high-end Ortofon 2M Bronze cart with very low hours. The cart has a striking look on this black table, and also pulls every detail from the record.
