If you walked into Tweeter Etc back in 1995 with a few bucks to spend, chances are you left with these Adcom components in your basket. Adcom developed truly great, affordable equipment that provided clean, clear audio signal and gobs of power for relatively short money. The GFP-565 preamplifier was one such component. A solid-state preamp, it contained all of the features & inputs one could ever ask for including a terrific phono stage. It also has a headphone input on its face for those late-night sessions.
One might wonder, was there ever anyone out there who saw these great pieces of equipment and "tinkered" with them to get the utmost possible performance? Well, yes, there was one such fellow: Victor Campos. Do a little searching and you will find that Victor Campos was a bit of a personality in the hifi audio world from the 1960s through the 1980s. Having even been featured in a ad for the KLH Model 100 speaker system some time in the-mid 1970s, and known for spearheading the design of the venerable Acoustic Research AR9 towers a few years later. At some point in his career, Victor floated over to Adcom to see what all the fuss was about. He made his mark there as well. Victor passed away at 86 years of age in 2017 and left behind a legacy of experimentation, innovation, and great gear.
This GFP-565 is a special piece. It was Victor's personal preamplifier, purchased from his estate only a few years ago. As per Mr. Campos's usual style, it has been heavily modified from the original design...All in the name of audio purity. Although an exact list of modifications is not known, our tech has analyzed this unit and come to the following conclusions:
- Phono Preamp replaced almost completely with a custom-made MM stage with 40dB gain.
- Power supply bypassed and replaced with an outboard unit +/-14v AC to DC.
- Multiple internal capacitors replaced with high quality components.
- Op Amps replaced with higher quality AD825 pieces.
- Multiple RCA in/out jacks modified and mounted: Bypass output removed, Processor loop changed to Aux input, CD and Phono Jacks updated, Lab output relocated.
- Tone controls bypassed.
This is truly a lovely piece of history and a wonderful tribute to yet another audio legend who left us with great examples of their intellect and innovation.
