Ariston Audio was a Scottish company building reference level turntables that are widely considered the predecessor to the ever famous Linn Sondek LP12. Maybe you already know that the Ariston RD-11 was first built in 1971. A little history nugget for you... the RD-11 deck was based on the AR turntable of the early 60's with a similar floating suspension system. The history of great Scottish craftsman behind this brand is a long and somewhat sad story - plenty on the net but know this, the RD-40 was one of their true statement pieces and even by todays standards, is a stellar performer in every way.

We really love this RD-40 matched with the superb (under the radar) ADC LMF-1 low mass arm. Many lovers of vintage decks reach for an SME, Jelco or Infinity but the ADC is a giant killer in every way & this combo's performance rivals today's $4,500 turntables. Built from 3 substantial aluminum castings for the base, chassis and dished platter, it's a weighty and substantial deck. The combination is extremely well built and very musical, exhibiting natural and lively tonality - a perfect analog pairing.  New belt, fully lubricated/ cleaned and tonearm mated with a super Goldring 2200 MM Cart that is the PERFECT low mass partner for this classic 12" arm.

* Just changed to a brand new Ortofon Blue as it's a better fit on this low mass arm ADC Arm

These decks sold in the early 80s. The '85 edition of Hi-Fi Choice references RD-40AC and RD-40E variants. The first RD-40s showed up on US soil around '83. The E version is DC based. What is presented here is the AC version. The RD-40 has a 24 pole asynchronous AC motor and runs strong and on-time.  Fully adjustable spring-loaded pillars allow you to level the table and keep things run-in true. Super HQ build and really a tank. This is with our question a KILLER analog setup and one that can truly stand out as the centerpiece of your classic vinyl kit.

Come give this amazing piece of audio history a twirl here at the Andover shop.
