The Yamaha M-4 is a critically acclaimed vintage stereo power amplifier produced by Japan's Nippon Gakki (Yamaha) between roughly 1978 and 1983. Renowned for its bold, minimalist aesthetics and exceptional build quality, this 18.5 kg (approx. 40 lbs) powerhouse is a favorite among vintage hifi collectors for its "Natural Sound" signature, characterized by a massive soundstage, transparency, and impressive control over low-impedance speakers.
Key Specifications
• Power Output: 120 Watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo), and 170 Watts per channel into 4Ω. It is well-documented by enthusiasts to frequently exceed these specifications before clipping.
• Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): Exceptionally low at 0.005% under full rated power.
• Frequency Response: 1 Hz to 100 kHz, ensuring a completely transparent linear audio pathway.
• Damping Factor: 200 (at 8Ω), providing superb grip and tight control over woofer cones.
• Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR): 118 dB, ensuring an incredibly quiet background floor.
Design & Features
• High-Bias Class-AB Circuitry: The amplifier operates in a highly-biased configuration that keeps it in pure Class-A for the first few watts of output before seamlessly shifting to Class-AB. This provides rich, warm, and highly detailed low-level listening.
• Premium Power Delivery: It relies on an massive internal power supply outfitted with two enormous 15,000µF smoothing capacitors and a pure copper ground plate to keep output impedance ultra-low.
• Aesthetics & Controls: Shifting away from the vintage silver-face era, the M-4 features an elegant anodized brushed black aluminum face with backlit buttons that illuminate green/red when speakers or power are engaged. The chassis features a heavily slotted metal top grille for optimal ventilation.
• Front Panel Displays: Includes horizontal 10-segment LED power meters alongside independent clipping distortion overload indicators.
• Rear Panel Attenuators: To maintain its stark front aesthetic, independent Left and Right input level controls (volume dials) are located discretely on the back pane
The Yamaha C-4 Natural Sound Stereo Control Amplifier (produced between 1978 and 1981) is widely regarded as one of the finest vintage preamplifiers from the golden era of high-fidelity audio. Highly coveted by vinyl enthusiasts, it is celebrated for its incredibly clean, transparent signal path and extensive cartridge-tuning capabilities.
Why Audiophiles Love the C-4
• A Vinyl Lover’s Dream: It features three phono inputs, supporting both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges.
• Front-Panel Load Tuning: Users can adjust resistance (100Ω to 100kΩ) and capacitance (100pF to 470pF) directly from the front panel to perfectly match their turntable's cartridge.
• True Headphone Amp: Unlike many receivers that run headphone outputs off a cheap resistor network, the C-4 features a dedicated, highly robust built-in headphone amplifier circuit.
• Overbuilt Construction: It features exceptional internal shielding, including a Faraday cage around the power supply and EMF shields separating the circuits to achieve dead-silent backgrounds.
Key Specifications
• Frequency Response: 5Hz to 100kHz
• Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): An ultra-low 0.0035%
• Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 100dB (Line), 85dB (MM), 77dB (MC)
• Outputs: Dual pre-outs (allowing you to bi-amp or run two separate systems simultaneously)
The Yamaha T-1 is a classic, highly regarded vintage analog AM/FM stereo tuner produced by Yamaha between 1977 and 1981. Belonging to Yamaha’s legendary "Natural Sound" lineup, it is widely appreciated by audiophiles for its minimalist slimline design, distinctive emerald-green illuminated dial, and excellent, clean sonic performance.
While it was positioned just underneath the flagship Yamaha T-2 (which is considered one of the greatest solid-state tuners ever made), the T-1 remains a highly capable "sleeper" choice that offers near-audiophile performance at a fraction of the cost.
Technical Specifications
• Type: Mono/Stereo Analog Tuner
• Tuning Bands: FM, MW (AM)
• FM Tuning Range: 87.5 to 108 MHz
• MW Tuning Range: 525 to 1605 kHz
• FM Sensitivity: 1.7µV (Practical sensitivity)
• Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 78 dB (FM), 50 dB (MW)
• Total Harmonic Distortion: 0.13% (FM), 0.4% (MW)
• FM Selectivity: 92 dB
• Frequency Response: 30Hz to 15kHz (FM standard)
• Output Levels: 500mV (FM), 125mV (MW)
• Dimensions: 435 x 97 x 376 mm (W x H x D)
• Weight: 5.7 kg (12.5 lbs)
Key Features & Architecture
• 4-Gang Front End: The FM section utilizes a 4-row variable capacitor (varicon) and MOS-FET front end. Though it has fewer gangs than the T-2, its advanced circuit design yields an impressive 100 dB spurious/IF response ratio.
• Optimum Tuning System (OTS): A proprietary Yamaha automatic mechanism that locks onto the station securely once you tune close to it.
• Automatic RX Mode (Local/DX): Rather than standard manual IF bandwidth switching, the T-1 features an automatic "RX Mode". It handles local and distant (DX) signals dynamically to suppress background noise on weaker stations.
• Built-in Recording Calibrator: Includes a tone generator button that outputs a test signal, allowing users to accurately set tape deck recording levels before capturing radio broadcasts.
• Variable & Fixed Outputs: The rear panel features both a fixed level output and a variable output controlled by a front-panel level knob
Thats a lotta spec and technical bylines but totally needed to convey the full audio weight of this classic Yamaha stack. This was the setup to lust after and paired with a set of ADS L1230 was a high end staple system back being pushed out the doors at Tweeter Etc. in the late 70's-early 80s. The NASA lights, black military-like visual presentation, The brute POWER and overall vibe screams all business and authority. Really a suer cool system and a spectacular example of early 80's audio. Fully serviced, ALL 3 pieces, by our expert in-house tech team, this Yamaha 3-Musketeers situation is ready to be the absolute center of your classic system for many years to come.
