Focal-JMLab Antea, "Très Spécial" French Floorstanders

Focal-JMLab was founded in 1979 in St-Entiene by Jaques Mahul, an engineer who saw the intersection of his passion for audio and his expertise in transducer design as the perfect jumping off point for a new company. Initially focused on driver development under the Focal brand, the JMLab segment of the business did design and build both factory-made and kit/DIY speakers for both domestic French and international markets.  Focal's innovative use of materials, specifically coated and woven Kevlar, as well as their inverted dome tweeter became industry darlings.

In 1996, the company released the Antea model, and example of which we have been absolutely loving since they walked into the shop about 2 weeks ago. These tall, heavy, and stately floor standers feature a traditional 3-way layout, of course using all Focal drivers.  The speakers have been noted by critics for their detailed and articulate sound. Specifically, Kevlar 10" cone woofers and 5" midrange drivers are known for their accuracy and smoothness. The Titanium diaphragm used on the tweeter is equally pleasing, with zero harshness.  

At 92dB sensitivity and 4 ohm nominal impedance, the Antea can be powered by almost any amp out there. Even higher powered tube amps can come together with these speakers for an amazing listening experience. We've now tried several, and haven't been disappointed with a single combo. 

The Antea are incredibly compliant, enjoyable, and powerful speakers when pushed, and they project all of the music at low volume as well.  A beautiful all-around component. The cherry finish on these speakers is in near excellent condition.  A few hairline scratches on the black gloss laminated surfaces, but absolute nothing notable and commensurate with 30 year old speakers.
