KEF Reference 104/2, A Star is Born

The KEF 104/2 is one of the most recognizable speaker designs in existence. The simple, slender profile and trapezoidal front baffle “protrusion” hide a heap-load of early speaker design technology that the company, based in England, still employed today.

The Reference 104/2 is a hefty little speaker, each weighing it at close to 70 lbs. Inside the cabinet is a unique bass design where two 8” paper cone woofers are positioned in a bandpass enclosure with a lighteweight aluminum “force cancelling rod” connecting each driver together at their centers. This rod nearly eliminates any potential mechanical vibrations which could be derived from the drivers themselves moving in space.

The most unique feature, however, is the front midrange/tweeter “pod” which is bolted to the front of the cabinet with 4” long lag screws. The ferrofluid cooled soft dome 1” tweeter is positioned in a d’Apolitto arrangement between two 4.5” coated paper cone midranges. Although these mids look like standard components, they are anything but. Scrapping the typical stamped metal frame of each midrange, the pod itself provides the structure each driver needs to stay centered, eliminating any unwanted midrange “ringing.”

These speakers have been completely serviced: new foam, new 2% matched crossover capacitors, and new tweeter ferrofluid. Besides some very minor lifting from one mid, which does not affect performance, they are nearly flawless.

And finally, these speakers are expected to be featured in a major motion picture, to be released this Summer. Which gives them that unmistakable “star quality” and some added collectibility.
