Marantz has long been a company ready to innovate and adapt with changes in technology.  Today it's digital streaming formats and A/V technological changes.  Back in the 1970s, quadraphonic sound was all the rage...A completely new way to experience music in 3D!  Quad receivers, quad turntables, quad microphones, and quad recording hit the market with a furry for a few long years before it finally fizzled out and was replaced by Dolby Surround sound in 1982.

The Marantz 4270 was invented to allow stereo listeners the ability to experience quad sounding their existing equipment.  All that was needed was an unused tape-loop and another set of loudspeakers, and the listener could have their setup surrounded by simulated 3D effects and music in a whole new way.  The 4270 was able to interpolate 2-channel program material into 4-channel using Marantz's proprietary Vari-Matrix circuit, or could support SQ or 4-CH standard quad formats. A connector for Marantz's advanced CD-4 adapter was also provided.

Power on-board could be supplied in two ways, either in Quad format with 25 watts per 4 dedicated channels for a complete Quad experience; or in Stereo mode with 70 watts into 2 channels to add a little oomf when surround sound was not needed.  The adjustability from the front of the unit allowed the user to really dial in the sound to suit personal preferences and room designs.  And don’t be misled by those vintage-era wattage numbers — Marantz was known for conservative ratings, and the 4270’s real-world performance feels far more commanding than the specs might suggest. Whether you're driving a pair of vintage ARs or modern high-sensitivity speakers, the 4270 delivers effortless dynamics, silky mids, and the kind of rounded, controlled bass that modern digital gear struggles to replicate.

Aesthetically, the Marantz 4270 is a showpiece. It boasts the iconic Marantz brushed aluminum faceplate, accented by the signature blue dial illumination that gives it a glow rivaled only by vacuum tubes. The gyro-touch tuning wheel glides with a buttery smoothness, lending an almost tactile sense of engagement to the act of finding your favorite FM station.  It has it all and is perfect for the Marantz collector whether using 2 or 4 channels.

This unit has been serviced by our in-house tech but does have ONE issue we need to disclose, and which is reflected in the price:

- The Source/Tape and Tape-1/Tape-2 switches on the left side of the unit have some spottiness and need to be depressed a few times before signal passes through. They have been serviced, and are as clean as they will get.
