The Marantz SD-4000 cassette deck, released in 1978, continued the Marantz tradition of exceptional audiophile sound with their distinct visual appeal. Designed to integrate seamlessly with older and contemporary equipment alike, the SD-4000 included a set of internal components that performed as well as the outside looked.
The deck features a 1-motor, 3-head playback and record system. The DC servo controlled motor not only provides spot on speed control to ensure pitch and dynamics are properly delivered from the recorded material, it also allowed Marantz engineers to provide a standard and "high-speed" recording and playback option. A higher speed provides the ability to record nearly 2x the material on the same length of tape. Something one would commonly see on reel-to-reel decks, but very rarely on cassette during this time period.
The record and play heads are capable of properly equalizing and biasing to four tape types: Type I, FeR, CrO2, and Metal. And the addition of Dolby B noise reduction adds to the functionality and flexibility of this piece.
This unit has been fully serviced by our tech, Tom B. Completely cleaned, calibrated and tested.
There is one anomaly: The tape door linkage was damaged over the years, so the door needs to be held shut while selecting any of the motor functions. Once the deck is playing, rewinding, or recording, one can let go of the door and enjoy the music.
