In the 1970s and 1980s, tape aficionados regarded the Maxell UD 35-180 as a "can't go wrong" tape, routinely utilizing it to dub favorite albums from vinyl to high-quality analog reel-to-reel without experiencing any “sticky-shed” syndrome. Many hobbyists recall that even after decades of storage, these tapes could be played back perfectly with zero residue or unwanted artifacts.
The Maxell UD 35-180 is a 1/4-inch, 1.0-mil thick polyester-based reel-to-reel tape, renowned for its low-noise, high-output (LN/HO) formulation. Housed on 10.5-inch metal NAB reels, this tape offers 3,600 feet of recording material, accommodating 96 minutes of playing time per side at a speed of 7.5 ips. The tape was designed to operate with higher bias settings, offering extended frequency response and superior dynamic range compared to standard output tapes of the era.
Like vinyl, tape formats have made a comeback. But the media itself is generally hard to find. We have stumbled upon a small treasure chest of NOS, unopened UD 35-180 tape. Like small time capsules, these tapes are ready for use, including the highly-sought, Maxell-branded 10.5” metal reels.
We have 9 of these tapes available at a very fair price of $119 each. Incredibly hard to find, and a must-have for the reel-to-reel nut.
