McIntosh MC2120, Rugged, Powerful, Utilitarian

The McIntosh MC2120 is a rugged, dual-channel solid-state power amplifier that delivers 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and up to 240 watts in a bridged monophonic configuration. Manufactured between 1976 and 1982, it became celebrated among audiophiles for incorporating the brand's proprietary Autoformers, which ensure optimal impedance matching regardless of the loudspeaker load.  

The MC2120 also features a built-in waveform comparator called Power Guard, which dynamically limits the input signal to prevent clipping and protect speakers from high-frequency distortion. Both the Power Guard and Autoformer features have stayed with the brand for over 30 years.

Built without output meters the MC2120 provides a streamlined, vintage aesthetic.  It achieves an impressive total harmonic distortion (THD) of just 0.1% across a 10 Hz to 100 kHz frequency range. This robust circuit design guarantees sustained, clean sonic delivery for demanding professional and high-fidelity home audio setups.

This 2120 is not going to win any beauty pageants.  It’s as rough on the outside as it is rugged on the inside.  But make no mistake, the sound output is classic Mac smoothness all throughout.
