For a conservative company like McIntosh, the concept of the XRT20 speaker system was very radical. The size, shape and two piece construction was very different from the traditional designs of earlier McIntosh systems. However, the XRT20 upheld the McIntosh tradition of excellence and performance. It fulfilled several fundamental requirements.
The XRT20 is a legendary vintage loudspeaker system introduced in 1979 and produced until 1985. Designed by Roger Russell, it is famous for pioneering a distinct two-element "line array" high-frequency column paired with a separate low-frequency bass cabinet.Design and ComponentsHigh-Frequency Column: Features 24 custom-designed 1-inch soft dome tweeters arranged vertically in a metal column, which earned a specialized patent for reducing floor and ceiling reflections.Bass Cabinet: A separate enclosure housing one 8-inch mid-range driver and two 12-inch woofers designed to isolate low-frequency vibrations from the tweeter array. Conservatively rated around 240 to 250+ watts for high frequencies, capable of handling heavy dynamic peaks when paired with robust amplification. Engineered to project an open, life-size, and wide sound stage with consistent vertical dispersion whether sitting or standing. Won prestigious accolades, including the Grand Prix Award in Japan in 1982, and laid the architectural groundwork for future McIntosh XRT-series line array speakers.
