The Pioneer SX-1250 is one of Pioneer’s truest classic receivers. It came out in 1976 and took the throne as the highest powered, largest receiver in Pioneer's lineup.  Rated at 160 watts per channel with a total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 0.01% at full rated output.  The frequency response is broad (from ~10 Hz up to 50 kHz) and the damping factor around 30 indicates serious driving power.  The FM tuner section and input circuits were built to impress, giving you not only volume but refinement.

The SX-1250 was released during a time when high-fidelity audio equipment was in high demand. It was designed to deliver exceptional sound quality and power, catering to audiophiles and music enthusiasts who sought the best audio experience. Pioneer was known for its innovative engineering and high-quality audio equipment, and the SX-1250 showcased their expertise in receiver manufacturing.

The SX-1250 is a stunning example of Pioneer’s beautiful design work from the 1970’s. The faceplate is brushed aluminum and houses a wide array of controls. The knobs, switches, and buttons are all well designed and situated in eye appealing rows. Given the number of controls the SX-1250 has it’s not surprising that the dial face and meters aren’t very large. When lit the function indicator lights and the backlit dial face and meters really give it an elegant look. The wood case only covers the front half of the stereo. The back half is filled with vents and heat sinks to dissipate the heat the SX-1250 produces.

The SX-1250 is loaded with features for the era: dual phono inputs, mic inputs, two tape loops, Aux and DIN inputs, tape monitor switching, full tone/balance controls, signal and stereo meters, and large speaker terminals for bi-wiring or heavy speaker loads.

Using only the main controls provides the same function as conventional audio tone controls. Employing the sub-controls, however, has the same effect as changing the turnover frequencies. The combined operation of both controls will produce a broad range of tone variations.

For the enthusiast who values analog warmth, tactile controls and build-quality that was “over-engineered,” this unit stands out. It occupies the room with authority, sounds great when properly maintained, and has collectible appeal — all the while being a serious functional amplifier/receiver for today’s music systems.

This example is a spectacular piece of classic audio in solid 8 condition. It has some pre-owned cool patina but no deal-breakers.  The AM antenna has been lost to time and is not replaceable, but of all of the features provided, and the overall lack of AM broadcasting out there today, it's really not a big loss.

This unit has also been through our tech's hands and has been serviced and brought back to spec; this is definitely one to own and is priced RIGHT!
