Shun Mook Audio is one of those companies that exemplifies the term "bespoke." Based in California, SMA, is a the brainchild Dr. Yu Wah Tan, Bill Ying and Andrew Chow - a group of if lifelong audiophiles with both Chinese and Japanese roots. They developed the company after extensive experimentation with what some might have considered obsolete materials and techniques. Indeed, compared to other audio companies, SMA's philosophy is definitely more "spiritual and intuitive" than calculable.
The cables presented here are one example of this philosophy. SMA's RCA-terminated interconnects use a combination of vintage/upcycled or NOS Western Electric cloth-wound solid copper wire. There are a few reasons why this type of wire would be preferred over modern formulas.
#1 - The purity and quality of copper from or 80 or even 100 years ago in some cases could exceed the standards utilized today due to supply and cost.
#2 - The PVC insulators that are normally used today can negatively influence audio signal fidelity and strength due to an inherently high dielectric constant.
#3 - Solid copper conductors offer better conductivity than stranded types, with slightly less internal resistance.
In addition to the above, SMA uses more than one length of this NOS cloth-wound wire per cable, with only two of them carrying the audio signal. The others are used to fine tune the temperance of the audio signal by imparting small hand-wound coils to the outside of the main conductors. These slight harmonic interactions can add or reduce certain colorations.
This combination of art and science is definitely extracted from Zen-like principles; the duality of these two forces working with one another to create balance. This is what makes these cable so special, and why they should be considered for serious listening enjoyment.
This 7' set are complete, with original packaging. The "tuning" process needs to be carried on whenever any component of the system has been modified. It's all part of the fun!
