TEAC is a Japanese company, founded in in 1953, that has been making carefully designed, and precision calibrated recording equipment for many decades. TEAC had its first break as one of the companies trusted to record events for the 1962 Olympics, for both audio and video. This commitment to high-profile and high-quality records still exists today with the company's newest product lines.
The 3340-S reel-to-reel player/recorder was introduced in 1972 as a continuation of TEAC's excellent reputation as both an in-studio and in-home leader in the tape handling industry. The 4-track 3340-S was developed in conjunction with another famous company, Tascam, and incorporated a number of innovative features to separate it from the crowd. It quickly became a landmark product in the world of home and project studio recording, largely due to its ability to record four discrete channels on standard ¼-inch tape—an innovative feature at the time that helped shape the rise of multitrack recording outside professional studios.
The heads used a hyperbolic shape to ensure the surface-to-surface coverage across the head was minimized, lengthening the life of the tape and the head. The tape transport mechanism is meticulously engineered with three motors—two reel motors and one capstan motor—ensuring smooth, accurate tape motion, low wow and flutter, and dependable performance even under demanding studio conditions. The 3340-S accommodates both 7-inch and 10½-inch reels and operates at selectable tape speeds of 7½ and 15 inches per second, giving users control over fidelity and tape usage.
The unit also supports both simul-sync (simultaneous sync playback and record on selected tracks) and sound-on-sound capabilities, making it ideal for solo artists building complex arrangements one track at a time, or bands wanting full creative control over the recording process.
Visually and ergonomically, the TEAC 3340-S exudes a classic studio aesthetic. The brushed aluminum faceplate is accented with large, responsive VU meters for each channel, high-quality knobs and switches, and clear track indicators.
This unit has been fully serviced by our RTR tech, Tom B. Everything from the record and playback meters to the capstan rollers and accompanying rubber, and all knobs and dials have been cleaned, serviced or restored to impeccable condition. The deck has been aligned and calibrated. It's SPOT ON and ready for all sorts of tape-loving debauchery.
Note, the TEAC metal 10" reels and hub adapters shown are not included in the sale.
This is an exceptional example at a fantastic, fully serviced price.
