Technics became famous for their SL-1200 turntables almost instantly. The SL-1200 was a magical combination of accuracy and durability that made it a fan-favorite for amateur and professional DJs alike. To enhance to the SL-1200's allure, Technics added a semi-automatic operation to the already highly-regarded direct drive motor assembly and released the SL-1700 in 1978. It was, of course, another huge hit.
All the user has to do is manually position the stylus over the record's grooves, and the SL-1700 semi-auto tonearm system gradually lowers the cartridge and begins playing. At the end of a side, the tonearm lifts and returns to its rest like a good little boy. All the while, the SL-1700 keeps perfect speed using a servo-controlled, brushless DC motor, which directly drives the platter above. The MkII model also increased the platter's mass slightly to improve stability.
This unit has been reviewed by our tech and cleared for excellent operation. The auto-mute feature also helps keep things quiet when in semi-auto control; but note, the mute feature does not engage when manually operated (this is normal). The clear plexiglass cover has a few minor swirls in it from age, but is otherwise really clean. And this table comes complete with a nice AudioTechnica MM cartridge to get things rolling with beautiful music.
