United Audio began importing German-made Dual turntables into the US as early as the 1950s. Dual, being one of the oldest audio-related companies in the world, was originally founded in 1907 by two brothers. The company started by making motors and associated assemblies until 1935 when they released their first turntable. After World War II, the famous Dual craftsmanship became aligned with a US importer and distributor and the United Audio monicker was adopted.
Of the company's full-auto product line, the 1209 stands out as one of the most popular. Initially released in 1970, the 1209 features and extra-heavy (4 lb) one-piece platter spun by a high-torque AC synchronous motor. The drive circuitry would automatically adjust for voltage anomalies, keeping the Wow & Flutter to under 0.03%, an incredibly low figure for the time, and even by today's standards.
The 1209's 3-speed operation and 3-size selection switch could accommodate discs of many types, making it a very versatile machine.
The aluminum lightweight tonearm, and patented Dual counterbalance and cart carrier system ensure quiet and fuss-free operation. The whole full-auto setup works extremely well on this model. Disc cueing, arm operation, and auto start and stop all work according to plan.
Fitted with a Grado moving magnet cartridge with relatively new "Green" stylus, this table is ready to spin tunes over and over again, with accuracy and clean sound. And the walnut plinth finishes off the whole look. A lovely detailed piece from front to back.
